Exploration 2: Hot or Cold Environments?
Times Repeated: 5
Hypothesis: If mealworms are given the choice between a hot and cold environment, then the mealworms will have a preference for cooler temperatures; they usually live in the earth where there is not much heat.
Materials:
Procedure:
1. Place the glass with the candle in it at one end of the box.
2. Place glass with snow in it on the opposite end, parallel to the candle.
3. Gently set mealworms in the middle between the two glasses.
4. Observe for 5 minutes.
Variables: The light from the candle could have deterred mealworms from approaching. This is a low variable as this experiment was conducted in a well lit classroom.
Results: Mealworms had no concrete preference for either cold or heat.
