Exploration #9: Daytona 500
Times Repeated: 5
Hypothesis:
If a mealworm is larger, then it will move slower in a race.
Materials:
Procedure:
1. Create the board for the races by including a start and finishing line and a line down the middle to create the lanes
2. Place the two mealworms on the startline
3. Observe and record the results.
Observations:
This experiment was one of the harder ones to test as it was difficult to get the mealworms to progress in a straight line. They would much rather search out the shelter of the corners of the box rather than bee line it from one side to the other. Due to this, we had to declare the winner of each race based on the one that made it to the other side first. This varied from test to test as the worms sought shelter rather than racing. Some worms even backtracked on several occasions or didn’t move forward at all.
Variables:
Size of the mealworms
Results:
The results of this test were inconclusive as the size of the mealworm did not play into which worm crossed the finish line first, if they did at all.
