Exploration 5: Will Advil have any effect on the mealworm?
Times Repeated: Over a 7 day period.
Hypothesis: If mealworms are placed in a container with Advil and ingest it, then they will become superworms.
Materials:
Procedure:
1. Place Advil in glass of water and allow pill to dissolve.
2. Place apple slice in the glass once Advil is fully dissolved. Allow to set for one full hour.
3. Place fresh bran at the bottom of tinfoil bowl.
4. Fill dropper with water diluted with Advil. Procure as much of the white fluff in the dropper as possible as this is part of the pill that will not fully dissolve.
5. Release contents of dropper into bowl, soaking the bran.
6. Let dry for 20 minutes.
7. Place Mealworms into bowl.
8. Place apple slice in bowl for mealworms to munch on.
9. Place tinfoil bowl in larger container housing other mealworms.
10. Mark Advil mealworms with permanent marker.
Observations:
Apple did not mold as the regular apples did. At the end of the week the mealworms that had been placed in the Advil environment were slightly bigger than their comrades.
Variables:
Exposing Mealworms to Advil.
Results:
Mealworms that received that Advil treatment grew to be visibly bigger than those not exposed to Advil. One of the mealworms exposed to the Advil died within the week after the experiment, another was the first to convert to the pupal form, a full week before the rest. Further testing would be required to see if the Advil had a long term effect on the affected mealworms.
